Meeting The Cure at The Manor

Thursday’s for throwbacks I heard… Here is one of my favourites and a true blast from the past. The above photo is very dear to me for several reasons. The obvious: it is Robert Smith of The Cure and me and a very nice car in front of Oxford’s famous studio The Manor. This must’ve been in winter 1991/92 when „Wish“ was recorded, one of the The Cure’s many great albums. Me and my camera team were invited to film and interview the band during a recording session for our Music TV show P.O.P on Tele 5. A huge honour for us! We were all so excited!

Boys will be boys… at any temperature

After we arrived and warmed up a little the band’s manager told me Robert was absolutely not to leave the studio as it was freezing cold outside and they were just recording the vocals to „Friday I’m in Love“. But while we were still discussing the matter because we wanted to shoot some scenes outside as well, Robert looked out the window, saw the old Buick that was part of our TV show, and off he went…

The other reason is the man who is not in the picture and who is also not with us anymore at all. My dear colleague Michi Römer, who did all the work that day and a wonderful interview with Robert Smith and The Cure – while I, being the presenter of the show, was in the spotlight posing around with the stars, just doing the Hellos and Goodbyes and some nice looking scenes in between. I think about that perfect day sometimes and I think of Michi, who knew so much about The Cure and was probably their biggest fan. This throwback’s to you, buddy! You are missed. ❤️
